How do I divert calls when they're not answered on a UK mobile?

On most UK mobile networks you divert unanswered calls by dialling **61*, the number to forward to, then **20# (the ring time in seconds) and pressing call, and you cancel it by dialling ##61#.

How the code works

Call divert codes are part of the GSM standard that mobile networks use, so the same codes work on most UK networks and most handsets. **61* means 'divert when not answered'. The number after it is where calls go. The **20 at the end sets how long your phone rings first, in seconds; networks usually accept 5 to 30 in steps of 5.

For example, to forward unanswered calls to 0161 000 0000 after 20 seconds you'd dial **61*01610000000**20# and press call. Your phone should show a confirmation message.

Useful related codes

These are standard too, though networks occasionally differ:

  • *#61# checks whether divert-when-not-answered is on and where to.
  • ##61# turns it off.
  • Some phones also offer the same setting under Settings > Phone > Call forwarding.

Landlines

Landline providers do this differently. Most let you turn on 'divert when not answered' or 'call forwarding on no answer' in their app or online account, and some need you to ask them. If you use a VoIP system, look for forwarding rules in its settings.

Check the cost

Forwarding a call can be charged as an outgoing call from your line to the forwarding number. Check your tariff's terms for diverted calls before setting it up, especially if you forward to a number that isn't covered by your inclusive minutes.

Step by step

  1. Get the number to forward to. This is your receptionist, answering service or colleague's number.
  2. Dial the code. On the phone your customers ring, dial **61*, the number, then **20# and press call.
  3. Check it worked. Dial *#61# to see the status, then ring your number from another phone and let it ring.
  4. Turn it off when you need to. Dial ##61# to cancel.

Where Pickuply fits

When you go live with Pickuply on a mobile, the set-up page shows the exact code with your Pickuply line already filled in, ready to copy. For landlines it tells you which setting to switch on. Your customers keep ringing the number they already have.

Questions

Will callers know they've been diverted?

No. They ring your normal number and simply get answered.

Does this work on an iPhone?

Yes. The codes are handled by the network, so they work on iPhone and Android handsets alike.
